Losing Angelo Ogbonna to an ACL injury has been a huge blow to West Ham’s aspirations to complete yet another historic season in east London.

The Italian has been a stalwart at the back for the Hammers since signing from Juventus in 2015, making over 200 first-team appearances in all competitions since his arrival.

He has been particularly impressive since David Moyes returned to the club two years ago, forging strong defensive relationships with the likes of Fabian Balbuena, Issa Diop, Craig Dawson and Kurt Zouma. While his centre-back partner has often changed, Ogbonna has been a constant presence.

But how he will be forced to sit out the rest of the season after picking up an ACL injury in the Hammers’ 3-2 victory over Liverpool, which required surgery over the weekend.

But the defender took to social media after his operation to declare his eagerness to get back to full fitness as soon as possible and to thank fans for their messages of support.

He said on his official Instagram account: “The surgery went well and now the recovery begins. I can’t wait to get back on the pitch as soon as possible. Thank you for all your messages of support. Today, even from here, I will support the team! Come on you Irons!”
