West Ham are considering a shock move for Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva, according to ESPN.

The 28-year-old Brazil international has reportedly had a falling out with manager Brendan Rodgers after being left out of the Reds squad that beat Stoke City 1-0 on Sunday.

This has led to increased rumours linking the defensive midfielder with a move away from Anfield before the end of this summer’s transfer window, and ESPN claim West Ham are giving serious thought to making an official move for his signature.

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic is still hopeful of signing Barcelona’s Alex Song on a permanent deal this summer but injury has seemingly prevented a deal from being completed thus far, with the former Arsenal midfielder believed to be sidelined until November.

Bilic could therefore be looking elsewhere for an experienced defensive midfielder, despite seeing 16-year-old Reece Oxford excel in that position in Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Reports over the last 24 hours claim West Ham are in talks with free agent Joey Barton, who is thought to be moving closer to having a medical at Chadwell Heath, but news of Lucas’ potential availability might result in the club thinking twice about signing the former QPR and Newcastle midfielder.

It is believed Lucas would be available for around £8million should Liverpool agree to sell him this summer, which would be well within the Hammers’ budget.
