West Ham are interested in signing AC Milan striker Alessandro Matri, according to Sky Italia.

The Hammers have been frustrated in their search for a striker before next Tuesday’s transfer window deadline, with efforts to sign Juventus’ Simone Zaza and Galatasaray’s Burak Yilmaz both failing to materialise in the past week or so.

But now Hammers boss Slaven Bilic has turned to 31-year-old Alessandro Matri, who spent last season on loan at Genoa and Juventus. Matri’s first team chances appear to have been limited following the loan arrival of Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli this week, which could tempt the Serie A giants in to selling.

The Italy international signed for Milan for €11million from Juventus in 2013 after scoring 27 goals in 69 league appearances for the Old Lady. But since then he’s only managed to score one goal in 18 appearances for Milan.

West Ham currently only have Diafra Sakho available for selection in attack, though Andy Carroll returned to first team training this week after spending the last six months sidelined with a knee injury, which has further added to the club’s desperation to add a striker to the squad before Saturday’s loss to Liverpool.

West Ham are also thought to be looking at Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor.
