Gary O’Neil would welcome an Upton Park return for Chelsea’s Frank Lampard.

The 34-year-old Chelsea midfielder – from Romford – is out of contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer and it’s looking more and more likely he’ll be able to walk away on a free, despite being the club’s most influential player since signing from the Hammers in 2001.

And O’Neil believes the club should try and tempt him back to where he began his career as an academy graduate.

He told the Sun on Sunday: “It’s surprising that a player of that stature and quality is being allowed to run out his contract.

“If the money was right and the deal was right, he’s a player I would love to see back at West Ham. He would be a great player ti sign if the club could get hold of him.”

The 29-year-old also revealed his disappointment in the club’s decision to hold off on offering Sam Allardyce a new deal.

“It shocks me that his job might be under threat,” he said.

“The lads all love working for him.”
